Dover Area Guide

Just outside of Clarksville, in the county of Stewart, sits the picturesque town named for the bluffs along the Cumberland River. A town of national historical importance, rich is the history of this country, Dover is the site of a national battlefield as well as the site of the historic ‘Surrender House’.

Attractions & Activities

Fort Donelson National Battlefield
Fort Donelson was key during the Civil War because of its location along the Cumberland River and when it was captured by the Union in 1862, it was the first major victory for the North. At Fort Donelson, visitors can learn about the battle, taking a walk back through history, and see earthworks and cannons, while taking a stroll along the Cumberland River.

Surrender House
Dover Hotel, nicknamed “The Surrender House” today looks much the same as it did when General Bruckner of the CSA surrendered to General Grant in 1862. Built in 1851, it still stands in the heart of Dover and waits for visitors to come feel the history that surrounds it.

The Homeplace
Visit “The Homeplace” at the Land Between the Lakes, where a working farm from the 19th century is recreated and operated by a ‘family’ exemplifying life from a simpler time.

Fort Donelson National Cemetery
In July 1862, Congress passed legislation giving the President of the United States the authority to purchase land for the establishment of cemeteries “for soldiers who shall die in the service of their country”. The legislation effectively began the National Cemetery system. In 1867, Fort Donelson Cemetery was established as the final resting for Union soldiers and sailors initially buried in the Fort Donelson area.
